A Reflection on the Feast of St. James

Today is the Feast of St. James the Greater, an Apostle of Christ whose remains are buried in the crypt beneath the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Today, I reflect on my pilgrimage to the Cathedral of St. James. Fourteen years ago, I was flying back home to the United States. As I looked out of the window of the airplane, I could see this famous cathedral after walking the Camino de Santiago for 42 days, having followed in the footsteps of pilgrims from around the world who have made this journey for centuries.

It was a pilgrimage that profoundly impacted my life and set me on a path I never could have imagined. At that time, I had completed 21 years of public service and had no idea what God had planned for me next.

Now, fourteen years later, I can only thank God for the many graces and blessings He has bestowed upon me. I never imagined I would one day run for political office, yet here I am.

I am not running for office for myself, but for you. I simply pray that God will use me as His instrument and that my words and actions will reflect His will.
