Today, I watched a clip from a joint press conference featuring Vice President JD Vance and Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced a new initiative to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Vice President Vance outlined his role as the administration’s lead on this effort, which aims to address an estimated $300 billion in fraudulent and abusive billing practices across programs that were created to protect the most vulnerable members of our population.

Vice President JD Vance and Dr. Mehmet Oz, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced a new initiative to combat fraud, waste, and abuse in the Federal Medicare and Medicaid programs.

According to Dr. Oz, estimates from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicate that approximately 5% of overall health care spending—amounting to $6 Trillion—is lost to fraud, waste, and abuse. During the press conference, a real-world fraud scheme from Minneapolis was cited as an example. In that case, fraudsters allegedly paid mothers within immigrant communities approximately $1,000 per child to enroll children in Medicaid under false claims of autism diagnoses. The children did not have such diagnoses, and no services were provided. Despite this, fraudulent claims were submitted to the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), diverting critical Medicaid funds away from legitimate services for special-needs children.

Dr. Oz stated that the State of Minnesota has been formally put on notice and has sixty days to provide CMS with audit results from the previous quarter. Until the state can demonstrate compliance and proper oversight, the federal government has paused additional Medicaid and Medicare funding to Minnesota DHS.

Vice President Vance further explained that fraud investigations will expand to other states where unusual spikes in claims and services have been identified—patterns that are not seen in other regions of the country. He called on states to partner with the federal government to root out fraud, waste, and abuse. Dr. Oz emphasized that he wants to “crush fraud” in the health care system by crowdsourcing solutions and engaging the public over the next sixty days. He urged providers, suppliers, payers, technology companies, patient advocates, and beneficiaries to report suspected fraud to help preserve CMS programs. Fraud, waste, and abuse can be reported by calling 1-800-HHS-TIPS or visiting CMS.gov/Fraud.

This press conference highlights a troubling lack of integrity and transparency within Minnesota’s state government. It reflects poorly on the Governor, the Attorney General, leadership within Minnesota DHS, and government officials who failed to act when whistleblowers raised concerns. In my view, political considerations took precedence over accountability, while everyday Minnesotans who rely on CMS services paid the price. As President Trump stated in his State of the Union address, “members of the Somali community have pillaged an estimated $19 billion from the American taxpayer.”

For more than twenty-one years as a registered professional engineer, I have managed federally funded projects worth millions of dollars and accounted for every dollar spent. I have also served for 19 years on the finance council of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish in Martin, where I have reviewed balance sheets, managed budgets, and ensured fiscal responsibility without the request or need for additional revenue. Despite rising insurance and healthcare costs, our parish has consistently operated within budget.

If elected as your state senator, I will ask tough questions of state officials entrusted with your tax dollars and hold them accountable. I will work tirelessly to identify and root out waste, fraud, and abuse within state government—because public funds should serve the people, not be squandered through negligence or corruption.
