Good morning District 27. On Saturday, I received an important letter from the Bennett County Clerk of Courts. I knew right away what it was before I even opened the envelope. I had been summoned to appear in court for jury selection. Selection for the jury trial begins on November 18th, assuming the trial will proceed.
I have never served on a jury before. Serving on a jury is part of our civic duties and responsibilities as citizens of this country. I have been summoned twice to U.S. Federal Court for both a trial and a grand jury, but my name was never called. Now I am being summoned to appear for jury selection in the State of South Dakota 6th Circuit Court. I guess I will find out if the case goes to trial and if I am selected to serve as a juror.
As I walked home from the post office on Saturday with my jury summons in my hand, I began to wonder whether or not my opponent would be able to fulfill her civic duty in South Dakota since she currently has an active voter registration in Colorado. More to the point, would she be obligated to show up for jury duty in Colorado since she has an active voter registration in South Dakota? As I began to ponder this quandary, it made me realize those jury duty summonses are typically based on current voter registration data. This begs the question: Will my opponent be able to get out of jury duty because she can claim she has an active voter registration in another state? This is just another reason why my opponent needs to be voted out since she does not take her civic duties seriously. When one registers to vote, it can affect the outcome of a jury trial, especially if one has two active voter registrations in two states. By the end of tomorrow, we can all do ourselves a favor, by simply putting this matter to rest by voting the incumbent state senator out of office so that she can have more time to focus on correcting her voter registration, so it won’t impact our court system’s process of summoning jurors in South Dakota. On November 5th, vote for integrity, honesty, and transparency. Vote for Anthony Kathol for State Senate. God bless.
